17. Ganesh Caturthi - Symbolic Worship and Immersions

Symbolic immersion is perform by sprinkling water on Ganesha while reciting appropriate immersion mantras. Such immersion is applicable to idols made of metal or porcelain which are retained and reused next year.

The Ganesha idols of metal or porcelain which are not immersed in open water bodies and retained at home are carefully placed in the altar or in a place where these are not disturbed. Such idols are not worshipped daily. These idoks are cyclically put for ritualistic worship during the festival of Ganesha Chaturthi only.

In emergency situations, when idol worship is not conducted to certain constrains, Ganesha can be worshipped symbolically using a betelnut. The betelnut is worshipped as manifested form of Ganesha. After conclusion of worship, the betelnut is ritualistically immersed in flowing water.

The water from symbolic immersion is not drained. This water is fed to the plants.
